NixOS documentation refusing to generate pages like readthedocs can drive a man insane...

It'll be the topic of major news outlets the world around. The BBC will have a live interview with the developers of Mint and Bazzite, governments will decide to invest in opensource to replace Windows, Mac and any other closed source viruses, there will be a Linux User Foundation that collects money purely for linux (unlike the Linux Foundation) where people can apply for jobs to work on the kernel with entry-level positions like intern and junior, the Opensource User Foundation will be founded to propagate opensource wherever and whenever possible, ... it'll be glorious!
We will truly enter a better world, all thanks for 5% penguin.

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box ( lemmy.world ) Englisch

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

onlinepersona ,

To disable predictable interface naming and switch back to the old scheme, add net.ifnames=0 and biosdevname=0 to your boot paramets.

What is the old scheme? This?

The solution to this issue is to assign custom names based on MAC address. The MAC address is hardcoded into the network adaptor, and will not change. (There are other ways to do this as well, such as setting udev rules).

Does that mean that until you name something it's unusable?

Debian used to be so good. What happened!? ( lemmy.world )

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

onlinepersona ,

Ctrl+F "NixOS"

Anytime stability is mentioned somebody has to chirp up with NixOS. It's the law.

Season 2 of Invincible really hasn't been great. Was it made during the writer's strike?

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

They are not the only ones. I've seen a few other alternative forges that haven't bothered dogfooding. It immediately lowers the trust in them. Does their shit really work if they have to host it on github?

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Still haven't reached the flakes stage. An experimental feature that the maintainers are too afraid to treat as experimental and make breaking changes, but unwilling to name stable because it requires bug-fixes and changes that would be breaking, but too afraid to break because... reasons.

Linux all the way, comrades!

Anti Commercial-AI license

It's idealistic, but may turn into action someday if did happen. If others participated in licensing their comments, it could even lead to a class action lawsuit, which could discourage commercial AI vendors even more and embolden opensource AI vendors.

I just wrote that I care. What's the point of asking such an insipid question?

Also, because something is shown publicly copyright doesn't exist? Is that seriously your take?

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Unlike the username "cum". Of course on can always expect value comments from such a user.

Never got the appeal even when I was on windows long long ago. It's not secure.

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Gnome is written by, just hear me out, Malus workers in their offtime who got screamed at by Steve Jobs for misplacing a button by a few pixels. They wanted to write a Mac interface without some tech dictator breathing down their neck, but with the same philosophy of "we know what's best for the users".

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Ah, a gnome lover trying to use reverse psychology. Cute.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Did they finally confirm windows 12 will be a cloud OS?

onlinepersona ,

There's a free version of windows? 😮 Did they just give up because everybody cracks it?

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

You're talking about Arch and Gentoo users, aren't you?

New user: which distro should I use?
Arch users: definitely Arch, it's so easy and stable!

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Unfortunately, they are the loud minority and other arch users don't tell them to spout such nonsense. Recommending the distro to linux newbies is not helpful. The minority will be willing to open a console in order to get stuff done. When I started, all I wanted was it to work and never see a console. Recommendations like gentoo and arch might've turned me a way from linux altogether.

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

That's fine for tech literate people willing to spend time on that. But non tech newbies don't want to open a console. Recommending Arch to them is a shit move.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Illegal stuff is bad, m'kay?

Anti Commercial-AI license

my canned response is ‘were all beta testers now, buckle up’

😂 absolutely best attitude. Maybe I need to do that at my job (what a shit show that is).

You'd be right tho.

Birds Aren't Real, Flying Spaghetti Monster, and probably a few other things started out as jokes and people started taking it seriously. But Arch probably didn't start as joke given how gate-keeperish the linux community was at the time.

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

The "I use Arch BTW" crowd is the loud but friggin' annoying minority. Sometimes I resort to just blocking anybody serious about Arch and making that joke.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Lol, putting the worst documented distro on the planet on the table is interesting. The majority of people new to linux would switch back to windows within minutes if they had to install and use nixOS.

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

Have you been on a microsoft forum with people talking about windows? I bet you most people will be looking for help.

Anti Commercial-AI license

onlinepersona ,

In terms of stability and packages, it's an amazing OS. Gone are the days of being afraid that of updates or system upgrades that might leave your system borked. Unless you're experimenting with filesystems and boot parameters, it's not straightforward to fuck things up.

On the flipside, by Linus is it difficult to get things working as a beginner. Good luck packaging new stuff, good luck creating new options, good luck cross-compiling, good luck configuring stuff with hardcoded config paths in /var/ or whatever, actually good luck understanding how to configure existing packages, good luck getting any kind of PR merged without the say-so of a chosen few, good luck changing anything in the community without getting past the gatekeepers, and have fun understanding why some random package is being installed and/or compiled when you switch to a new configuration.

Runit, making systems easily pwnable since 2004 🎉

  • Step 1: Make a system service run as root
  • Step 2: Give service a runlevel that starts it at boot
  • Step 3: Make the file modifiable by a normal user
  • Step 4: ???
  • Step 5: pwned

Wow much philosopy. Is great. Incredible chievement. Very pressive!

Mailinglists just make for terrible reading. Suddenly there are quotes from discussions not on the page. The worst tool for async conversation right behind smoke signals.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Didn't I read somewhere they were considering using NixOS instead of messing with unstable Arch and forcing it do stuff it wasn't made for?

onlinepersona ,

If you write code, you might be aware of the AI coding assistants out there. Most notable is probably Github's Copilot. Well, that AI assistant has an ongoing case against it to answer the question you're asking. So, just like you add a GPL (or other) license to your code, creative commons licenses are for text and media that aren't code and I add it to my comments.

Whether they will have an impact has yet to be determined, so we'll see if creative commons with a non-commercial clause is for naught or not.

I'm a little concerned Microsoft will make a linux distro and introduce proprietary components into it that will drive users of other distros to it because "why use any other distro when the M$ distro can run my games/microsoft office/whatever?". Because that's how they'll kill linux: a bunch of proprietary kernel modules with which only Windows software can run.

We should have multiple linux mega-corps before that happens, otherwise we're fucked.

What's up with these trans-memes surrounding linux? Are they just a loud minority?
