I wonder if anyone has made an FPGA core for a CPU that natively runs BASIC

@foone I had this thought(crime), but for PHP

Fun fact: it turns out it doesn't matter if you have a 2.4 gigapixel camera if you LEAVE THE LENSCAP ON

@foone Nikon D6: oh don’t worry, there’s enough gain in this sensor with low enough noise that I can properly expose this for you.

I wonder how well your average computer motherboard would handle being in a pressurized air environment.
Like your sea level pressure is like 14 PSI, and inside a car tire is like 30 PSI.
I wonder if any components would fail at the latter pressure?

@foone many folks have mentioned electrolytic capacitors, but now I’m wondering about ceramic capacitors and their microphonic effects

Time to look inside a thing!
I got this at the ewaste place a few weeks ago.

Bad idea: since there's a mechanical limit to how much you can cool down a CPU, design a motherboard with a rotary barrel.

While one CPU is used, the other five can be cooling down!

I'm gonna see if I can get my raspi to boot from a spinning rust drive. Why not?

jpm ,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@foone easy, Pi4 can boot from USB storage. I know this because I destroyed the MicroSD socket on one of my Pi4’s…

So there's always the debate between QWERTY and alphabetical keyboards, but everyone is missing the obvious way to solve this disagreement.

There's no reason the alphabet HAS to be in that order. It's arbitrary, and English would work almost completely the same if the alphabet was in a different order, you know?

So, let's just put the alphabet in QWERTY order!
It'd solve all our problems from Q to M.

@foone it still blows peoples minds when it’s pointed out that twinkle little star, alphabet, and baa baa black sheep all have the same tune with minor flourishes

Getting movies in Pan & Scan is annoyingly hard. I'm just gonna have to buy a bunch of VHS tapes and digitize them, I guess.

Maybe some occasional early "full-screen" DVDs on ebay. Those'd be easier to rip.

@foone notably The Simpsons Movie had a 4:3 DVD release alongside the widescreen DVD release. You had to be careful which one you bought…

Properly photographing a 3.5" floppy disk for archival is annoyingly complicated. The label has THREE sides!

I've already built an automated system to take a picture of the front of a disk, but really I need to take THREE photos if I want to get the whole thing.

That means either three cameras or I need to rotate the disk 90° and then 180°, which is going to really stress the limits of my mechanical engineering skills.

@foone 2 mirrors, make your own periscope that unwraps the edge and back so it can be photographed from the front (tricky to design)
