Why does everything in the tech sphere have to be made overtly creepy by adding anime teenage schoolgirls?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don't like either of them but Apple doesn't have a long history of abusing telemetry and forcing things on their users.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

"Commitment" is not really the word I would use. I would just say it's "significantly less bad".

This just happened at all the checkout counters when I was at Home Depot...

Tesla board member and close Musk confidant Antonio Gracias once took Musk's phone away to prevent him from tweeting late into the night, Isaacson said during a Twitter Spaces event on Wednesday.

"At one point when Elon was firing off tweets without filtering them in the least, they were on a trip and Antonio took his iPhone — Elon's iPhone — and locked it in the hotel safe with Antonio punching in the code so that Elon couldn't get up at 3 a.m. and start tweeting again," Isaacson said, describing Gracias as "one of Elon's closest friends."

Musk later got hotel security to open the safe at around 3 a.m. so he could start tweeting again, Isaacson said.

The biographer added that Musk is "almost addicted to the drama that comes with Twitter" and sees owning Twitter as a way he can be "king of the playground."

"It's something he loves — loves almost to the point of compulsion," Isaacson said, adding that some of his friends, including his brother Kimbal Musk, attempted to convince him not to buy Twitter.

I'm sure they didn't deserve it but OP's comments are notably missing from this screenshot.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

LOL just another way to mine data and extract value from you, rather than providing it.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean it's probably a similar amount of time and effort trying to fix Windows than it is learning to use Linux.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I spent many years trying to fix Windows before moving...

Just got tired of fixing the same bullshit over and over in this cat and mouse game trying to gain control of my computer.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I got a free iMac recently and immediately tried to install some software on it and was told "we don't recognize this so you can't install it". Like excuse me WTF?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Ah I never tire of defenders of corporate shitfuckery.

Whose computer is it? Mine or Microsoft's? Did they pay me or did I pay them? Should I also not be concerned about the regular pop-ups begging me to use it?

Did you ever stop and wonder why it is that MS so desperately wants you to use their browser?

Fuck right the fuck off, please.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I'm sure there are workarounds. That's besides the point.

If they had said "we don't recommend you install this" that would be completely fine and understandable. But that's not what happened. I wasn't presented with any option to bypass it. I was just told no. I shouldn't have to Google how to do that. It's completely absurd.

Fun fact: it also won't let me turn off Bluetooth. How fucking batshit is that?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

My point is that you aren't going to outsmart Microsoft on their own operating system.

You did a terrible job of making that point.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

grandma would hit OK without reading it.

Then grandma would be responsible.

I don't buy it. Because Apple has lied about this sort of thing time and time again. Giving us bullshit explanations about why they won't let us control "our" devices. "Security", over and over again they use this bullshit to explain away all kinds of self-serving shitfuckery. I'm certain it has far more to do with their 30% app store fees.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

LOL not sure if this is because Windows warns you about dumb shit or because Linux will totally just allow you to nuke your entire OS with a single command.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Well I never used command line in 30 years of Windows.

It's pretty much a requirement for Linux that you copy and paste random commands you don't understand from strangers on the internet.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

How?

I don't understand the question.

cmd and powershell in windows are super useful

Yes but it's only necessary for one of them.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That's 30 years of using closed source software from strangers

...ok?

Or do you have many good friends at Redmond WA USA ?) :-)

I don't understand.

Maybe decades ago it was.

No it still is. Look up any software for Linux. There will be links to download the software for Android, iOS, Windows, MacOS and if there is a Linux version it will just put the command and not even explain what it is or what to do with it, because they just assume if you're using Linux that you're familiar with the terminal.

Do a web search for "how to <anything> in Linux" and tell me it doesn't send you into the terminal to do it.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I never claimed there were no cons.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

CLI is a bigger necessity on Windows than Linux

That is 3937182948% incorrect.

and on Linux help pages are from people that know what they’re doing

That's exactly the problem. Linux is made by and for developers.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Websites offer that but you can usually find those in your favorite package manager

Most of the time the only thing you'll find in package managers for mainstream software is unofficial, and many times broken.

Downloading software from shady websites is the Windows way of doing things.

Then...don't do that? Go to the official source of the software? It's not like Google or Apple repositories aren't regularly packed with malware pretending to be something they're not...

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean Windows is a free OS. You can freely download and install it without paying and receive nothing but a watermark in exchange.

It's become more and more like Android over the years where "you are the product" so this is unsurprising.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

There's really no need to run Windows gaming rigs anymore 🤷 I have 2 and both are Linux

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It's embarrassing to see people actively defending the wealthiest corporation in the world baking ads directly into your operating system.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Solasta: Crown of the Magister which has poor compatibility in wine and proton to my understanding.

70 reports disagree

I don’t need the hassle

Linux is far less hassle in my experience. Especially with one of the many SteamOS-like distros.

But by all means, you do you.

I don’t need an excuse to leave the gaming rig powered on when I’m not using it.

...why would Linux give you that excuse?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Never heard of siege. Only heard terrible things about CoD and Warzone so...no love lost there. Pretty much anything works unless the developer specifically opts out of it or they add some bullshit kernel-level anti-cheat.

Linux "just works" better than Windows in my experience, when it comes to gaming. All the Windows bullshit was always in the way. There has never been any sort of gaming integration into the Windows OS the way Steam Deck OS has.

helenslunch , (Bearbeitet )
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Sure but you can also download and install it entirely for free.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean, for all intents and purposes, it is.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Fair enough

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

MacOS is not free, it's just included with the hardware...

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don't need any gaming integration in windows.

I used to have problems all the time where there was some sort of XBOX overlay error message every time I launched a game. Games would minimize at random in the middle of a match. If you want to change any system settings you have to back out of the game, as opposed to SteamOS which has the quick access menu. Simply shutting down the system sometimes takes like 3 minutes, as you have to exit the game, wait for it to load the main menu, hit exit AGAIN, wait for it to close, then hit the Windows button and shut down. In SteamOS I don't have to do anything except open the menu, select power, and select shut down and the system handles the rest.

Just a few of the OS integration improvements.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Heard of it. Can't blame me for not recognizing a generic single-word reduction of the title.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Very possibly caused by one of the many mitigations I had in place to remove all of the bloatware, telemetry and ads before switching to Linux. Not sure if that makes it any better.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I just dont get it

I mean it's not complicated. If you don't want to use Windows, your options are:

  1. Pay thousands for a Mac computer that may not have the features you want, and never be able to upgrade or repair it, or

  2. Get a software engineering degree so you can figure out how to install, use and regularly debug Linux. Because even techy people you know that might want to help you don't know anything about Linux.

There just aren't many options for "normies".

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

And this is why it will never be more popular: A community that refuses to acknowledge the shortcomings, and animosity for anyone who questions it or asks for support.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

you'd be better off stating people are too lazy to install Linux.

Call it what you want, the fact remains and will persist until something changes.

Just because they proved you completely wrong

LOL they did no such thing.

and millions of others using Linux daily prove you wrong

Well if you're going to put it that way, billions of Windows users prove that I'm right daily.

Just accept the L and move on.

Back at ya.

M1 Air costs USD $750 where I live.

That MacBook will have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is completely useless, not to mention fucking highway robbery when you can buy a Windows laptop for half of that with better specs.

Hyperbole to sell an easily disprovable false narrative.

LOL I'd love to see you prove me wrong. Go on ahead. It's easy!

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It is easier more than ever to install linux today.

People like to use words like "easy" and "hard" to describe clicking buttons and typing letters into a display. These are the wrong words. The word is "complicated".

Doesn't matter if it's easier, the fact remains that it is complicated and likely always will be.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

So the issue isn't that installing Linux is complicated, it's that installing an OS on an empty drive is not a thing that the vast majority of pc users has done

It's both

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You said thousands of dollars. They're not thousands.

But they are...

And yeah, you can get a cheaper machine. And put some flavor of GNU/Linux on that too!

Not pre-installed.

None of those links prove me wrong. Try again.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I've installed a dozen distros. I've also tried to assist others in installing them. It doesn't go well.

Installation is only the beginning of the problems though.

helenslunch , (Bearbeitet )
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Once again, here's one at $750.

Once again, completely unusable.

Tuxedo

System76

Niche suppliers normies have never heard of. Can't find them on retail sites or in stores. Also very expensive.

I know all of these things. I use Linux. I think Linux is better than Windows. I'm just answering the question of why so many people continue to use Windows.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That's exactly how it works when someone else calls your claim "easily disproven".

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Padme is right. My windows using friends are always mad about some change or another and I'm just chill as a cucumber.

I'm very much not-chill for a variety of reasons. Mainly because it's a prime example of what's been made abundantly clear the last couple of years: once you get users on your platform, they will never leave, regardless of how much abuse you throw at them.

For another, there's a stupid idiom that goes around all the time that goes something along the lines of "if you don't like it, don't buy/use/do it!" as if their decisions don't affect your personal choices. A prime example is headphone jacks on phones. Linux has the potential to be so much more useful with even a miniscule fraction of the funding (like 0.001%) that companies like MS and Apple have.

It's incredibly frustrating asking people to consider doing something in their own best interests and being mocked and ridiculed in return or even listening to them excuse and defend their abusers.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don't know why people go through all this trouble just to give money to publishers that don't give a shit about you. There's nothing on Blizzard worth buying anymore. Don't bother. Blizzard is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Lies. You wouldn't buy a PC with Nvidia nonsense just to install Linux.
