he/him

You probably heard about me because I am the founder of the Twisted python networking engine open source project. But I’m also the author and maintainer of several other smaller projects, a writer and public speaker about software and the things software affects (i.e.: everything), and a productivity nerd due to my ADHD. I also post a lot about politics; I’d personally prefer to be apolitical but unfortunately the global rising tide of revanchist fascism is kind of dangerous to ignore.

I turned on my phone's mobile hotspot and couldn't remember what SSID I gave it.

but I checked the list from my laptop and found "FCC Party Van" so I'm pretty sure that's it

@foone I feel like these never commit to the bit quite enough. I would want to lend it some verisimilitude with like “FBI Mobile AP B-8286” or somesuch.

Anyone bought the Riven remake yet? Can you check the credits and tell me if I'm in it?

(I'm supposed to be but I haven't heard anything since, and I don't have the cash to grab a copy yet)

Edit: it has been confirmed: I am!

@foone TIL there’s a Riven remake, going to need to get a copy of that

watching the latest Deviant Ollam talk, they mentioned wondering if you can just trigger carbon monoxide sensors with some chemistry.

Turns out you can just buy tester canisters! They're just spray cans of Carbon Monoxide! That sounds... somewhat dangerous.

Terrible idea: an author writes a book, but instead of releasing it, they train an LLM on it, and release the model.

So readers can ask the LLM to generate text based on it, but can never know the original text.

@foone I seem to remember a performance-art bit in the floppy disk era which was a single-user experience (a hypertext book, IIRC) that deleted itself after viewing, and was never put online. This reminded me of it but I cannot remember what it was called. Fitting, perhaps.

Is there any recourse -- besides bolt cutters -- to these scooter companies coming by in their truck and locking their commercial product to every slot in every bike rack so that nobody with a bike can use the rack at all?

Is there anyone at the city who will do something about these assholes?

glyph ,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@jwz dang are they at this again? I thought they all went bankrupt after people started throwing the scooters in the nearest body of water

Real thought:

What depresses me most about the state of the world at present is that we've stopped caring to live up to the spirit of our ideals.

When we fail them and are pressed, we can rationalize our terrible actions based on technicalities - and large swaths of our culture have normalized doing this very thing.

It is my most sincere hope that we can walk our way back from this. I see some signs of this, but would prefer to see many more.

glyph ,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify When I read a Hot Take™ like this, I feel like it says more about the mental state of the speaker than it does about the world. When did people live up to their ideals? Pick a decade, then look at the history for that decade through a "were they hypocrites" lens and you will feel just as bad about then as you do now. Is there an actual fact pattern that you are reacting to, or do you just feel generally bad and hopeless and attempting to pattern-match a reason for it?

glyph ,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify Sorry that my comment was unhelpful, I appreciate your reply nonetheless. I do think you're on to something with popular media being more reluctant to clearly take a stand on right & wrong; although there are counterexamples from both time periods, listing them in a litany would be even less helpful; so instead I'll share my favorite video about the systemic forces which create "no politics" media (where "caring about right & wrong" is shown as naïve) https://www.polygon.com/videos/23059933/call-of-duty-military-entertainment

@foone @TechConnectify I have actually wondered about this before: how come Scantron never got used in this way? It would seem like a pretty big cost reduction and time saver if you had an error in your deck. Did the tech not temporally overlap?
