Probably even less interesting here than at the other place, but such is life; at least this isn't a Monty Python quote.

I spent the afternoon tearing into the depression piles and finding shit I forgot I even ordered. I also started hitting the disorganized stacks of shit and putting them in labeled bins so I can put the stuff that belongs on a bookshelf on one. I can also walk in my room now which is an improvement.

@foone @luigithirty Entirely correct. I need to learn how to make my own, including slipcases, so that I can suitably document my homebrew machine...

designing my next keyboard PCB is going well

EDIT: There's a typo in the alt text. It's supposed to read "Some people, when confronted with a problem, think 'I know, I'll design a keyboard.' Now they have two problems"

@baljemmett@mastodon.online avatar

@foone Only two? Pfft, N-problem rollover is where it's at!

I wanna see a 3d printer designed by woz.
No limit switches, it just bangs the print head against the casing on boot up like an apple II drive

baljemmett ,
@baljemmett@mastodon.online avatar

@foone Mine does that if one of the limit switch wires has worked loose again - the firmware even knows it's happened but carries on anyway! I can't recommend it as an approach...

I may have accidentally been paying for an unused VPS for, uh, 36 months.

baljemmett ,
@baljemmett@mastodon.online avatar

@foone I, er, may have done this too a while ago, except for 200 of them. It only took me two years to get around to logging in and shutting them down though.

Bad idea that could still make a lot of money:
A small desk-size washing machine, with proprietary soap packets, designed to clean keyboard keycaps.

@foone glances down at keyboard that's going to be donating its caps to a new one shortly, grimaces

This would be a 'shut up and take my money' thing except I suspect my bank manager just woke up in a cold sweat...

Bad idea: an external floppy drive that can appear as a mass storage device of arbitrary size. The way it works is it has a little screen, and you use that to configure how big you want it to be, then it formats the proper number of 3.5" floppy disks.
Then when the PC tries to read a sector that's not on the current disk, the display will just prompt you to insert disk or whatever.

@foone I'm tempted to suggest making it a dual floppy drive, so that you could have two sections of the full device online at once - the canny user could choose to keep, say, a frequently-accessed chunk of metadata online or whatnot. But then I worry that this might be making it a better bad idea rather than a worse bad idea.
