I wonder how hard it is to make a fake USB printer.
Like, a printer that takes any printout and goes "yep, that printed just fine" but nothing ever comes out anywhere

@foone If it can be a network printer instead of USB, it's pretty easy to do, PCL uses port 9100 to send the print job, it's possible to just have some software listen locally (or remotely) to that port, accept the data, and just discard it.

I've done that in the past with a generic LaserJet PCL driver, both to discard unwanted print jobs that would never clear until successful, or capture it for data extraction.

@foone Because this was bugging me, i played with it, and i found that you can actually just create a printer on the nul: port under Windows, and have it successfully print jobs to the void.

@foone No errors, print jobs just vanish from the spooler after being successfully written to nul:

A fun side effect of being anosmic is that sometimes I think I smell something, but it's just the nasal equivalent of phantom limb.
The best part about this is that because the smells I'm supposedly smelling aren't real, my brain doesn't seem to think they should be limited to things that would make sense to smell; you know, physical objects with distinct odors.

I just smelled slackware.

@foone My brain loves to do that to me all the time.

What makes it even more ridiculous is that it'll map a "smell" to things that do not have one, but it'll map it to things like "a blend of exhaustion, CRT monitor with a distorted line slowly scrolling up and concrete floor", which is apparently now a scent.

It's a bit like BSODs have a taste for me, as in, it's mapped to "taste" for some reason, but it's not a valid flavor. It'll make whatever i'm drinking taste off for a moment tho!

when I finally build my Workbench Keyboard, one of the weirder options I'm going to add is a way to paste pre-loaded text files from the onboard storage.

like you could have texts\serials\windows\win10.txt and you navigate to the that file and hit paste and it just types out the FCKGW- nonsense for you

@foone Barcode scanners in "keyboard wedge" or HID mode are perfect for that, i've been abusing that option for years.

Bad idea: an external floppy drive that can appear as a mass storage device of arbitrary size. The way it works is it has a little screen, and you use that to configure how big you want it to be, then it formats the proper number of 3.5" floppy disks.
Then when the PC tries to read a sector that's not on the current disk, the display will just prompt you to insert disk or whatever.

@foone It should have two drives so that it can write on a disk while you swap the other.
