this electrical device is a special sort of terrible: They labeled the polarity of the DC power jack, but not the voltage (or current, for that matter)

@foone Plug that sucker into a variable power supply and turn the knobs until it either works or explodes!

gonna assume that just means I can throw whatever I want at it.

97v 19amp, here I come!

I shouldn't have to disassemble your device and find the voltage regulator and read the datasheets to know how many volts to give you!

It's an L7805: so the max voltage is 35v, recommended voltage is about 10v?

@foone 9 to 12 depending on heatsinking, aye. Works down to seven and a half.

@foone L7805 or LM7805? As a linear regulator the amount of heat it will dissipate will (input_voltage - 5) * current. So if you give it 10V and draw one amp from it the case will be dissipating 5W of heat. (quite toasty and will melt a TO-220 without heatsink) Typical safe dissipation in still air is about 2W so 7A in and 1A draw before you need to add copper.

@foone I shouldn't have to disassemble your device and repair your poor soldering to make it work out the box, either.

I remember when Amazon sold products, and wasn't just a front for the same Chinese sellers who infest eBay and Aliexpress.

@foone curl a penny to the barrel diameter, shove it in and clamp your ground electrode to it. Poke the thoriated tungsten probe in center. Turn off the gas, you won't be needing it.

Boom, instant TIG PSU.

@foone Surely you will not regret 97v 19amp.
