iOS and iPadOS 18 add the option to format external drives

@arstechnica Great. The marketing for iPads as a “computer” has always been a lie because iPadOS was missing so much basic computer functionality but now there’s maybe one less feature missing. Do it to about 100 other missing features and you’ll have a much more compelling product as an alternative to a laptop. Biggest problem for me is you can’t make fully featured iPad apps from an iPad without a Mac.

Like, this has to be a special, specific, added by manufacturer feature in device menu. Not a natural consequence of user having access to the drive.
You have no raw (root) access, cannot write a program that format it like any universal computer was able to do since 50's, Apple must let you do that first.

@arstechnica sure would be nice if I could plug a $12 flash stick into an ipad, and have it spit a backup on there.
