I know we've moved past fiber-wrapped cables for Good Reasons but I think it'd be funny if some of the Rope Geeks produced ethernet cables.

I want a hemp cat6 cable damn it.
It should come with rope oil and those emt safety sheers

@foone paging @pjf , paging @pjf . Your rope making skills are required in aisle 1.

@foone The house I grew up in had knob-and-tube wiring and those wires were fiber-wrapped and "nothing bad happened". That said, that house also had a two-story outhouse (fortunately offset slightly.)

Vehicles moved from fiber-wrapped wiring to newer plastic-coated wiring is actually much tastier to rodents. Plus, my old with all that fiber-wrapped wiring only had one fuse, so super easy to work on.

I digress. Yes, hemp cat6 with rope oil and porcelain connectors.

@morgant yeah, I grew up in a house from the 20s, and it was all knob-and-tube cloth-wrapped shit. We only ever had one major electrical issue, thankfully.

@foone Ours house was a New England mill-worker's home from the 1890s, so also had horse-hair and wood-lattice insulation behind all the plaster walls -- Surprise, I'm highly allergic to horses! -- and when my parents sold the house they were required to have the wiring modernized. Very understandable, but difficult with the wood lattice!

@foone Thinking about the smell when it heats up

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@antijingoist I'm not. Anosmic! Does hemp have a strong smell?

Also I'm not sure your ethernet cables are supposed to be getting hot. That sounds dangerous

@foone only if its artisanally produced, 100% organically sourced, ethically farmed and produced cables. No child labor either.

@darkling@mstdn.social avatar

@foone Of course, these days, you could have your cable wrapped in optical fibre. You know, for bandwidth!

(I'm sure there's some audiophile nutter out there willing to claim that that's either very good or very bad for your signal).

@foone or; going with a different kind of rope geek; intricately tied shibari Ethernet

foone OP ,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@rgegriff I've long thought someone should do shibari with ethernet, but then plug in both of the ends and use it as an actual network, and transfer bdsm porn over it (perhaps just photos/video of this session).

It'd be like getting tied up by the concept of bondage porn itself!

vxo ,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone that sounds unusually beautiful somehow

@jackemled @vxo @rgegriff and if you're a furry ,it can be IP over Avian BDSM

@foone @vxo @rgegriff It always returns to IP over Carrier Pigeon in some way!

@foone let's get the bdsm people on it. so your cat'o'nine tails can also be a CAT'o'nine tails
