but my laptop's USB ports give so little juice that it basically never can charge my phone

and I don't think I can pull more than an amp or so from any of: mini DP, VGA, or 3.5mm audio.

so that leaves the ethernet and the expresscard

neither of which realistically can push any power. this ethernet doesn't even have PoE support (although it SHOULD), and the expresscard probably is like PCMCIA, where it barely has any power

it looks like the max current from an expresscard is 1.3 amps at 3.3v, or a miserable 4.3 watts.

I'm from the past so I'm offended by 3.3v interfaces.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we end up moving to USB 5 which ironically has no 5v

there was a device made for a little while by a few different makers that would pool power from across multiple USB ports to provide for higher-power devices.

this is not a good idea, but it is arguably an idea.
