@fasterthanlime which outcome is this according to your interpretation?

@piecritic I'm inclined to say "pulled", tbh

@fasterthanlime I think both. It will be shipped as is, but also that changes will be made.

No doubt a version is already tanked on all the June 18th machines, and at best this version can be altered with a Windows update, which takes a few days at least.

@fasterthanlime My money is on "the smallest number of superficial changes to give the pro-microsoft press and reply guys ammunition."

@fasterthanlime shipped as is, until the EU gets involved many many months later to say the opt out feature isn't good enough because "open my settings after the install with no clear disable this feature" button isn't good enough. The change will only then be made in the EU. Satya will continue to harp on about security being a number one priority.

@fasterthanlime I'm going to bet that they add an "on/off" toggle when you go through initial setup. Should be enough to satisfy regulators and give aibros ammo.

It's their big flagship product, I imagine them shelving a feature like this and admitting defeat will be unpopular with executives.

I imagine they'll release it, tone down the marketing and then eventually it'll go into obscurity and non-use like Cortana.

@fasterthanlime shipped as is and later it turns out to be even worse than we thought

@fasterthanlime launched, but with some changes to wording somewhere and maybe off by default so there's appearance of listening to feedback

@fasterthanlime I'm very cynical about Microsoft's propensity to respond to public pressure. I think they want this feature because later on they can quietly change the implementation and their TOS to mine the data. When you consider the incentives, it's hard to see them making meaningful changes.

@fasterthanlime
Predictions:

  1. Probably rename it
  2. Add “on-premises storage” so that corporate could see what you're doing while at work (but not Microsoft)

@fasterthanlime Prediction on the changes to be made: Cloud will be added. Because. Oh, we need to encrypt that sqlite database.
