zed is so fucking good now.

so fucking good. it's been my daily driver for a few weeks now! it's so good.

mandarvaze ,

@fasterthanlime Their main page mentions Github Copilot and GPT-4
Does it support local LLM (via ollama and like) and/or codium ?

Both Github Copilot and GPT-4 are paid, ollama and codium are not, hence asking

fasterthanlime OP ,
@fasterthanlime@hachyderm.io avatar

@mandarvaze ollama yes for the assistant (although I haven't tried that yet). It's not possible to swap out github copilot right now afaict.

mandarvaze ,

@fasterthanlime Thanks.

I found out that using Ollama is part of the documentation. (Should have checked the documentation earlier 🤦)

https://zed.dev/docs/assistant-panel#using-ollama-on-macos

Downloading Zed now.

@fasterthanlime@hachyderm.io avatar

@mandarvaze The setting has existed for longer than the documentation, which was updated in the last few weeks if I remember correctly 😌 I don’t mind answering questions about Zed!

@fasterthanlime It’s my go-to editor for Rust these days too. Really really slick.

@fasterthanlime cant agree more! been using it since around "v0.120" and its a one way trip!

johz ,
@johz@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime I've tried switching to it two or three times now, and each time I make it a week before switching back to VSCode. I think the git integration just isn't there yet — I didn't realise how much I use diffs to see what I've actually been doing all day...

But there's something about it that makes me keep on wanting to try it out, so there's clearly something cool in there...

@fasterthanlime okay I think this was the push I needed to finally try it out

I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Only a matter of time before the VCs pull the rug. FOSS or GTFO.

Also, that “multiplayer” feature sounds like a supply-chain attack waiting to happen.

jakob ,
@jakob@snabelen.no avatar

@argv_minus_one @fasterthanlime at least it's open source with both the app itself and the infrastructure for the collab stuff available to build and run yourself! I've been test driving it on linux by compiling from source and it's pretty good

argv_minus_one ,
@argv_minus_one@mstdn.party avatar

@jakob @mo @tulpenkiste

It's not open source. https://zed.dev/eula Source code is available, but you have no right to fork.

@fasterthanlime

@argv_minus_one @jakob @mo @fasterthanlime Ah. Guess I'll be skipping Zed then.

fasterthanlime OP ,
@fasterthanlime@hachyderm.io avatar

@tulpenkiste @argv_minus_one @jakob @mo I don’t think that’s accurate. I asked them to clarify.

You only need to look at the crates.. The workspace has GPL3, Apache, AGPL. All the crates use one of these, 101 of them use GPL3 including the Zed binary crate. They also restrict accepted crates via license type https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/script/licenses/zed-licenses.toml

Looks pretty damned open to me.

So 🤷. FOSS nutters gotta stop sitting on their balls and taking it out on random shit.

aleks ,
@aleks@social.lol avatar

@argv_minus_one @fasterthanlime It's completely FOSS though: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed

Editor: GPL
Rust UI library: Apache 2
There's also some server-side stuff under AGPL, but I don't know what's in it.

It wasn't FOSS initially, but that changed some months ago. They even kept the commit history going back to 2021, instead of the usual working-prototype-in-the-first-commit approach.

So, the website needs updating, then?

I really like its vim and terminal integration. The major roadblocks right now are git diffs and (I am deadly serious) file icons.

I understand the appeal of the mono-color file icons, but I'm really used to colored ones and I can't find out how to change it.

scubbo ,

@fasterthanlime What do you like about it? (Genuine question, not hostile challenge - I've never used)

@fasterthanlime yeah I switched to it as my daily driver a few weeks ago as well, it's great
