i did not realize how fragile "sd card plugged into raspberry pi" is. my headmate's 3d printer server just... had an sd card die. it sort of reads except sometimes it spends half a minute reading a single sector

wtf

@whitequark I find that RasPiKey are handy for this. They cost a little bit more than an SD card, but they are much more durable flash. They do however stick out of the SD card slot quite a bit.
I use them in my PiHole boxes after I got bored of the SD cards dying all the time.

@edward @whitequark I didn't know that existed and it's very funny that it does.

It's an emmc with a microsd connector!

That's just microsd with extra steps!

@whitequark I maintained a raspi that did nothing but display one website for about a year, and THE ONLY problem I had was SD cards dying.

the raspi is just so good at killing microsd cards

@foone @whitequark I’ve been doing a lot of tests with raspberry pi CMs, and building/testing with automation.

That kills about one “cheap” card a day, or makes a “reputable” regular one last maybe a week, before it starts dying like you describe.

Solution I found was buying high endurance, industrial-grade cards. First batch I got had been lasting 6 weeks now!

@foone Isn't that linux tho, treating a SD card like a hard drive?
