Water1053 , in Me, trying to step into the world of linux

Something that works fairly well for me:

  • Make a copy of the file you're working sudo copy /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak
  • Ask a particular question to ChatGPT How do I mount a samba share in Ubuntu Server 22.04?
  • Read through the commands and try them out. ChatGPT is great for stuff like this, especially with follow-up questions, and giving you detailed info on error messages.
  • If you fubar, then simply restore your backup file and try again.

Yo mods, let us post amogus femboy ANSCII art on this post.

--no-preserve-root is a security option to keep you from accidentally removing all your files. Make sure you always use it along side the -f option and -r which stands for rescue - meaning rm will create a rescue copy of the deleted data.

incompetentboob ,

It means No! Preserve Root.

The first time it paused my YouTube video inside Firefox when a call came in on my phone, it blew my mind. And then when the call ended, it just casually resumed the video. I love it. That, the clipboard syncing and easy sharing of files between devices make it absolutely awesome to have.

I'm not really familiar with KDE connect (and new to Linux in general, but can't see myself ever going back to Windows), could you elaborate on the first part? How does KDE Connect help you watch firefox videos on your phone? Thanks!

TheChargedCreeper864 ,

Somehow, KDE Connect treats a media stream happening on a connected device the same as if it's playing on your local device. If you're playing a video on your laptop in Firefox it will add one of those "music player" things in your phone's notification shade, allowing you to control the video from your phone.

Android automagically pauses everything it deems to be "media playback" until the end of your call, thus also pausing that Firefox video on your laptop.

F-Droid is the more valuable app store anyway. I always check there before Google Play.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

Check Neo Store. It is an alternative front end to F-droid and has been way less buggy for me. Though to be fair just yesterday it ate up 20% of my battery life due to not being able to sync a repo (I think), but that hasn't happened before.

sinless ,

I use Droid-ify myself. It looks like Neo Store is a fork of it. Although neither has been updated for a number of months, Droid-ify's latest version is most recent.

Happy to stumble across this meme. I didn't know KDE Connect was a thing

westyvw , in XFCE taking the picture

Thats not Gnome. You need to remove the glasses. Hair is not an option. Two eyes, mouth, nose. That's all you get. And you are not allowed to focus on all three, only one at a time can be shown.

drbi ,

Gnome and KDE are equally good.

themoonisacheese ,

Imo they are both solid technologically, but KDE delivers much more with it's defaults. Obviously you can theme both to hell and back and make them look however you want and get whatever functionality you want, but default KDE is so much more usable than default gnome it's not even a competition.

timbuck2themoon ,

Or... Gnome works perfectly for people with different workflows and KDE by default is bloated...

Maybe we can agree both are just good?

happyhippo ,

KDE uses less RAM, you can fact check quite easily.

Depending on the distro it ships with more or less stuff, but a few games, an office suite, media players for audio/video and in some cases a partition manager, are all necessary tools in any setup, at least in my book.

I don't see the bloat.

havokdj ,

Plasma itself isn't bloated, it is only bloated if you install the entire suite of KDE applications. Installing plasma by itself doesn't require that many dependencies.

GNOME has a similar level of optionals for their desktop environment as well, you're just expected to actually INSTALL them.

timbuck2themoon ,

I didn't honestly say it was. I was being sarcastic to make a point.

UnfortunateShort , in true comparison

That would be way more accurate with KDE on the left and XFCE on the right. GNOME is completely different (and also, hands down, very ugly) out of the box.

Bankenstein , in true comparison

Used both. Dislike both. Now on i3.

warmaster , in true comparison

KDE feels like Windows to me. GNOME is something entirely different, it's UI is very touch friendly, only downside is it has old code all over the place.
