I think no one said it needs to be ON a distro's repos. That's a straw man.

A package should be available in a native package format in a way that doesn't cause conflict with what's in the official repo. The reasons for a single source of truth on installed status should be obvious; but given the format of some packaging and the signed assurance of provenance, thr advantages to a native format can be leaves ahead of even that.

Wow, is this meme a really naive take that is contradicted by - oh god, everything. Can someone know about enterprise Linux and also be this naive?

corsicanguppy ,

Your security people have not forgotten about appimages. It fills their nightmares.

corsicanguppy ,

Da, comrade.

corsicanguppy ,

Sorry; what would be the alternative NOW?!?

I don't see all that happening before it's time to vote, so isn't what you're saying now a bit of a distraction from the very real risk to the stability of the country?

Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box ( lemmy.world ) Englisch

Context for newbies: Linux refers to network adapters (wifi cards, ethernet cards, etc.) by so called "interfaces". For the longest time, the interface names were assigned based on the type of device and the order in which the system discovered it. So, eth0, eth1, wlan0, and wwan0 are all possible interface names. This, however,...

corsicanguppy ,

It’s amazing how many linux problems stem from ‘Redhat, however, found this solution too simple and instead devised their own scheme’. Just about every over complex, bloated bit of nonsense we have to fight with has the same genesis.

Ansible can be heard mumbling incoherently and so, so slowly, from the basement.

Remember who saw apt4rpm and said "too fast, too immune from python fuckage, so let's do something slower and more frail". twice.

corsicanguppy ,

so does RPM.

Careful. Jeff's format gives us really great advantages from an atomic package that we don't have elsewhere. THAT, at least, was a great thing.

Lennart's Cancer, though, can die in a fire.

expensive piece-of-shit (enterprise) systems, since they sometimes explode if your server changes interface names.

At no time in the past 25 years with Medium Iron have I seen something blow up on a reboot because an interface comes up late. We'd solved the issue of unreliable init order in 1998 - RH6? Zoot? Compaq, Supermicro, even embedded stuff on was-shit/still-shit gigabyte mobos. /etc/udev/rules.d handled this reliably, consistently and perfectly. Fight me.

Some day we'll learn that memes aren't rushed pre-T9 SMS messages from 1995. 'ppl'? The nineties are over: evolve with the times!

Debian used to be so good. What happened!? ( lemmy.world )

Firefox on Debian stable is so old that websites yell at you to upgrade to a newer browser. And last time I tried installing Debian testing (or was it debian unstable?), the installer shat itself trying to make the bootloader. After I got it to boot, apt refused to work because of a missing symlink to busybox. Why on earth do...

A someone who worked in OS security, I beg you dont use flatpaks.

You're technically correct.

That's the best kind of correct.

My sister in law is a (not American) cop when she's not an EMT ... And she also moonlights as a volunteer fireman.

Where on the hero-bastard spectrum of cheap generalization you've devised does she sit?

Not a word. I'd hate to learn he died from stupid.

Intel went ahead and used it to build Management Engine, arguably one of the most widespread and invasive pieces of malware in the world, without even as much as telling him.

Is that arguable because it's complete bunk? You may as well say the same about IPMI.

corsicanguppy ,

It seems we've lost sight of reality there.

As we don't intend to attend much cinema any more, I hope they bring back essentially a Dolby Noise Switch for movies. I don't want to sacrifice too much, but booming noise followed by what comes out as whispered dialogue really cheapens the experience.

I hope they can find a process that gives us back a sound track for the sub-17:7 sound system.

VI was so pathetic and old - blasphemy! - that I almost gave up on college and the career as I mistakenly thought in my grief, at having to suffer that dreck, that it was all gonna be like that.

Thankfully someone showed me anything different. About 5 options, actually . I picked one and I'm happy to use anything else (eg sed-i) unless vi is the only thing left; and then I decide whether it's worth it.

What a sad old callback to the Vietnam war that is (not for the name; it's that old).

I know the vi cabal will be upset to hear someone who tried it actually doesn't worship it. They're gonna downvote me. That's okay. I got over that hate 30 years ago.

Just remember : there's probably something else you can use and experience more joy, if they haven't demanded everything else be removed.

Careful with the distance ones. A girl I worked with left her spouse and took her kids to AUS to be with her dream partner; who only forgot to disclose the fact that he was a high level drug dealer. Sometimes you miss out on important details like that, so just be careful.

They're both great. JC's needs the backstory to really feel the feels. But it's all there.

Buy a condo in a concrete building.

  • quiet as fuck if you also get triple-pane windows
  • neighbors are a rare part of your day if at all
  • in the right area, no cars to drive, park, or recover from impound (you need a city with a subway though or forget about it)
  • things will be nearby
  • the rooftop is nice
  • no lawn to mow
  • no roof to repair yourself
  • usually decent Internet options
  • with some forethought, a high vantage and a good view.

We're stoked but I hope yours works out also.

Like, what are we even suppose

supposed

to tell “normal people” about security? “Yeah, don’t download files from people you don’t trust and never run executables from the web. How do I install this programming utility? Blindly run code from over 300 people and hope none of them wanted to sneak something malicious in there.”

You're starting to come to an interesting realization about the state of 'modern' programming and the risks we saw coming 20 years ago.

I don’t want to go back to the days [...]

You don't need to trade convenience for safety, but having worked in OS Security I would recommend it.

Canada just released its timetable to phase routine maintenance dental care into a consolidated health plan.

It's starting small, but if our Republican wanna-bes don't kill it we could have universal coverage and equal access to dental care regardless of economic station.

If someone whom I respected shat a bit in email about my work product, I'd be sad for a bit. Then I'd read it again and understand it's my work product and I am not my work. I can make mistakes and I can fix them, and fixing mistakes is how we get awesome.

I have received negative feedback. And I did feel just a little butthurt about it. But it was in NJ and I was new, and didn't see from the first read that Buddy was expressing frank and honest concerns about my work product and not me. I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me to clue in, but I did. And we worked through my mistakes and I was the better for it. And I learned.

And when he said my work didn't suck as much, I knew I was improving, because I could trust him.

You need to learn honest from asshole.

corsicanguppy ,

but in Norway [:] English. Everyone speaks it

Scandinavia is absolutely killing it for bilingualism, among so many other ways they're killin' it -- no, really, other countries should just study them for clues in general. My experiences (just Sweden, Denmark and bonus Iceland, so far) is that they say Hej and listen for your "hello", flipping over into beautiful and perfect English without hesitation. Their language programmes are just fucking astounding, really.

Spain's fine in the touristy spots, but Spanish itself is VERY accessible as a language, so it's kinda moot like France.

In Germany I will have to rely heavily on the kindness of strangers as I will never grok the language.

Dutch is still leading in most cases.

Sint Maarten should check-in and tell us about the English-Dutch separation and the class system it all but foments. It's 90% fascinating if 10% disappointing.
