River Seine unfit for swimming one month from Paris Olympics, tests show ( www.rfi.fr ) Englisch

Paris (AFP) – The river Seine is still failing water quality tests one month before the Paris Olympics when it is scheduled to host the open-water swimming competition and the swimming leg of the triathlon, results showed Friday.

Do they have a backup river? Or can they just go up stream past where the poo is discharged?

alcoholicorn ,

While I don't doubt that more Germans are becoming more antisemitic, promoting zionism does not combat antisemitism. Lord Balfor (of the Balfor Declaration), was extremely antisemitic. He was very explicit about how removing jews from Britain and getting a shiny new colony were both positives.

But also that statistic is useless because a significant number people arrested in Germany for antisemitism since Oct 7 were Jews protesting against Israel.

alcoholicorn ,

no shit, “from the river to the sea” is forbidden in Germany

You understand why this is fucked up right? Is it also forbidden to say "Hawaii will be free" or "Free Tibet"?

alcoholicorn ,

Yeah no in the context of a german explaining why rounding up jews and throwing them in jail for protesting Israel is no big deal, you gotta be really, really obvious when you're making a joke since we're already well past poe's law.

Not every german.

But it's depressing every time I talk politics with one and it turns out they're a "leftist" who's actually a liberal, or an "anarchist" who's a zionist, or a "green" who supported ending all nuclear power (which restarted their coal industry), an "anti-imperialist" who only opposes Germany's enemies.

I expect this level of ignorance from American liberals who've literally never had a thought outside bourgeois democracy, half of Germany was communist until 30 years ago, they don't have an excuse.

We'll be able to push the wolf to the left after the election!

There's also a bigger picture with Tank Man, that shows the mostly empty square the tanks were leaving, with a handful of soldiers and bikes.

And a bunch of other photos showing the battle that took place in the surrounding streets, with cops that had been lynched and burned and protesters gunned down.

The evidence disproves the western narrative of tanks machine-gunning protesters inside the square, then liquefying bodies, that were then burnt and washed down the drain (and getting stopped by Tank Man on the way out).

That's not to say the Chinese claims should be taken at face value, but nothing I've seen contradicts their claim of 300 dead and several thousand wounded.

Edit: This still cuts off the end of the video, but it does show more

There's a difference between a few humans throwing some rocks at something's head and poking it with a sharp stick and what chimps do.

    alcoholicorn ,

In scale? Yes. In brutality? Go look up chimp attacks.

    alcoholicorn ,

Yeah the context is that many indigenous people depended on the buffalo for food.

It was basically the same as when Israel pours concrete down wells and burns olive groves that took centuries to get that productive. They knew for every buffalo they killed, an indian would starve.

That image is similar to the rooms full of luggage in Auschwitz in what it represents.

Of course this didn’t pan out. 2-3 huge tech companies rushed onto the market with somewhat crappy products just to own the patents so smaller companies couldn’t innovate. When they weren’t immediately profitable they started cutting back and shutting down.

The way advanced capitalism can't even grow a product before trying to strangle it for every last penny is all that saves us from special Black Mirror levels of hell.

How many of those engineers are gonna end up at Lockheed or Raytheon?

What about MSG, KCl, and the salts that have trace minerals?

I'm sure the chinese have equivalent memes about having to learn arabic numbers, at least you don't have to use it in written out numbers, 20 is 二十, two-ten, 200 is 二百, two-hundred, 2000 is 二千, two-thousand, 200,000 is 二十万, two-hundred-thousand.

There less memorizing irregular words like twelve and X-teen and converting 30 to thirty, since it's all pronounced as written.

According to wiktionary, it means to wither and fall, in some contexts it's used to refer to rain or tears.

It also means bottom(in gay contexts). lmao what that zerussy do?

    alcoholicorn ,

No, death is 4 actually. Nobody knows why.

    alcoholicorn ,

Same, and not having to remember different versions of words for tense and gender is great. Where Chinese gets you back though, is measure words. Is a can of beans many 颗? 粒? One 包? Oh I was supposed to remember 罐?

    alcoholicorn ,

No shit, but why is it a homophone with such a common word?

    alcoholicorn ,

Good energy, it just didn't work here. It would if you had the word bussy: 菊

    alcoholicorn ,

No, but whenever you have something that's countable (even if it's just 1), you have to do <number> <measure word> <thing>, so instead of "I have a ticket" or "we want 2 waters", you have to do "I have 1 <measure word for flat things> ticket" or "I(plural) want 2 <measure word for cups> water".

There's a generic measure word, but I think it's seen as improper to use it.

    alcoholicorn ,

Sure, but they're often different enough to to be obvious in context, or similar enough to have a shared etymology.

Tones came later in Chinese, so when you have 2 homophones with similar meaning and different tones, they're usually from words that had 2 suffixes, which were later dropped, but the tone of first part remained, 买 and 卖 didn't end up with the same word by coincidence.

    alcoholicorn ,

    十二 not 二十?

    alcoholicorn ,

Shhhh they don't need to know that yet.

    alcoholicorn ,

You're a new type of cyborg cop, that works for a new anti-terrorism unit to hunt down terrorists, formed after they bombed the twin towers. A global pandemic keeps the streets eerily quiet.

The game came out in 2000 btw.

Yeah, I left out the spoilers and stuff that didn't actually happen.

There's a lot of what were open secrets in the 90s, like that the gov't was scanning internet traffic and phone calls, the existence of the NSA, the CIA blackmailing US politicians, that gets combined with wacky conspiracies in there, which leaves a bad taste.

    alcoholicorn ,

TBF, for the last 30 years even Cyberpunk authors completely missed the point that capitalism will subvert these amazing technologies to make everything worse if we don't do something. Neal Stephenson is a crypto shill.
