My conversation with @GarethDennis is now live (early) on Nebula!

We talk about level boarding for trains: why you should want it, and why it doesn't happen more often.

By the end of this conversation you'll realise that level boarding isn't a "nice to have", is something we need to demand for all transit projects everywhere.

@notjustbikes @GarethDennis the level boarding is excellent in Japan because as you said it is just faster and also there’s an accessibility law. The most visible is the yellow block in train stations and streets. Also every station must accommodate wheelchair therefore elevators are added or wheelchair side ramp in stairs are installed. Staff put a tmp ramp (even with level boarding) and a staff is waiting at the destination. Have enough staff helps.

It's annoying when people complain that my content is "too eurocentric". And after making my Shinjuku station video a lot of people are saying that "finally" there's some "non-eurocentric" content. 🙄

I make videos about MY experiences in cities. I don't summarize a bunch of facts you could easily find on Wikipedia, Twitter, or news articles, and then lazily recite it over stock footage.

I actually GO to places, experience them in person, and over 90% of my videos is footage I filmed myself.

@notjustbikes I’m sure you got (partially) immune to the critic but it’s nice to have a video artisan. Listing video ideas for myself, I realized they are so much topics anyone can cover. It shows on the Shinjuku video, It was packed with information and the video was long already.
Shinjuku is well done. And the new passage (with all the TV with commercials) is helping a lot. Definitely the new south with the deck is a great addition.

@notjustbikes I’m happy you don’t get discouraged by extremists, even those that message you privately to show you the finest car infested part of Japan … Me? No … only once 😅

I am on the weirdest train yet.

I booked the HIGH RAIL train, which is billed as a stargazing train.

I thought I was getting a train where you look at the stars from the train.

But no, it's a train where you go to the station near the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, get out for 40 minutes, and try to see stars from the parking lot.

Oh, and there's a detailed guided explanation in Japanese. And a small planetarium on board.

Weird.

At least they have good beer! 🍻

I'm going to Japan soon, so I wanted to talk to one of the experts, Life Where I'm From, about what I should look for when I'm there, and we ended up having a great conversation about why Japan has stayed (relatively) affordable while other developed nations have not!

Hear our conversation in the latest episode of the Urbanist Agenda podcast (currently early-access for Nebula supporters, public release next week).

@notjustbikes for the 60cm to the road to build an house is not true anymore. Many still exists with 60cm to access to the road but it is illegal to rebuilt.
The nation wide law is 200cm.

The owner needs to buy part of the land of the next house or lose 50% of the value.

@notjustbikes Greg mentioned that new houses have double pane windows. It is true but the windows are not airtight most of the time. Most of the windows are on rail (imagine a barn door airtightness). I figure that out when I bought a brand new house that I had to buy new windows without rail for soundproofing.
At the end, my window (the physical hole) had 2 double pane windows.
