This week I've been preparing for the first release of ! Most of the time was spent on fixing build scripts; between CMake, Github Actions, itch.io/butler and fixing multiplatform compile errors, I'm ready to shovel my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon. 👁️ 🥄 🩸

Fortunately I do have progress to show: the in-game quit menu works now, so you don't get stuck in a broken level! That's something, I guess...

In game footage of OpenCrystalCaves, showing the player character start in the main level, enter a level, and transition to a bare level with concrete blocks and a few barrels. The player opens the pause/quit menu, showing options to quit to Windows, Title or Main Level.

I don't want to disappoint the 3 Body Problem series fans, but in episode 4 where an old IBM PC shows alien messages, the screen resolution is wrong and outside of the capabilities of the CGA and Hercules video cards available in 1984. #DOS #IBMPC

Some landscape renders made with Bryce 3D come by on Mastodon this week and it reminded me of the first landscape renderer I used: VistaPro.

It was was one of many #DOS programs on the "Virtual Reality Madness" compilation disc from 1993. VistaPro also came out on Amiga and Mac OS, and later Windows.

VistaPro (v1.01) didn't give you much control but the results looked stunning then, if you allowed your computer to render the highest quality image for a few hours that is.

Lowest quality render. Useful for positioning the camera and checking the lighting.
Higher quality render: more polygons and enabled (oak) trees. Trees can easily block the camera.
Highest quality render at 1024x768 with maximum polygons, Gouraud shading and texture blending.
