I just was thinking that my mouse wasn't tracking very well and automatically flipped it over so I could try cleaning the ball.

it's 2024, of course it doesn't have a ball, this is an optical mouse!

but apparently my computer reflexes are stuck in 1996

@foone same, about twice a day

@foone is it completely wrong tho? At least mine often catch a hair or something and that disturbs the laser while lasering 🤷‍♀️

@foone at my house, in present day, that would mean there's a massive wad of cat floof I need to clean out from blocking the laser :D

@foone I recently switched to a trackball. The first time it got weird because of dust and stuff mucking it up it took me an embarrassingly long time to think to clean the...umm...nest? whatever you call where the ball sits.

deetwenty ,
@deetwenty@todon.nl avatar

@foone from experience I can tell that dust can make an optical mouse loose tracking, though cleaning that is a lot easier than cleaning a ball mouse

@foone
I used to have to clean crud out of my trackball, when I could still get wired trackballs that I liked.

@foone I flip my optical mouse over all the time if it isn't tracking right, to check for cat hairs.

@foone I find myself flipping my wireless mouse over and turning it off and on from time to time to reset the connection will perform a similar “cleaning” effect. Modern problems, modern solutions and all that, but I swear, sometimes they are still rooted in the past.

Farbs ,
@Farbs@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I refuse to believe that Foone Turing doesn't regularly use a ball mouse.

@foone@digipres.club avatar

@Farbs semi-regularly. once a month or so, more if I'm still working on my NT4 project

@foone TBF, it wouldn't really be surprising of you still use a ball mouse in 2024

mattgrayyes ,
@mattgrayyes@chaos.social avatar

@foone I do that still too!

jpsays ,
@jpsays@mastodon.social avatar

@mattgrayyes @foone While I’ve cleaned them many times in my life, that’s no longer second nature. However, it probably should have been. I keep having mouse troubles where it can take minutes before I realize that lint has gotten stuck in the led window of the mouse, causing unreliable operation. Doh.

@foone my mouse has never quite tracked well ever since I got cats

@foone cleaning the mouse poop from the rollers was a regular task :)

martijn ,
@martijn@hachyderm.io avatar

@foone Heh. I need to clean my trackball anyways. The tracking is optical but the bearings do get smudgy and mess with the rolling resistance.

DiomadcaT ,
@DiomadcaT@mastodon.social avatar

@foone i had to maintain that reflex because i keep ending up with cat hair in it

griibor ,
@griibor@mas.to avatar

@foone tracking is stored in the ball(s).
